QureTech OncoBiome

QureTech OncoBiome is an early stage biotech company. We explore the tumor-associated microbiome and develop new therapies with the potential to transform how we treat cancer and significantly improve patient outcomes.

Our lead program focuses on a new treatment apporach to colorectal cancer by targeting specific bacterial virulence factors involved in tumor growth, immune escape and metastasis. These bacterial proteins enable attachment to and invasion of tumor cells and activate the Wnt/beta-catenin pathway to upregulate oncogenes and promote colorectal cancer cell proliferation. Increased levels of the bacteria in the colorectal tumor creates a an immunosuppressive microenvironment making them resistant to immunotherapy. Our goal is to develop drugs that can help the patient’s existing immune cells and existing and future immunotherapy to eliminate the cancer.

Dysbiosis of the bacteria that colonize the human gastrointestinal tract is increasingly recognized as a hallmark of cancer. Tumor-associated bacteria contribute in driving tumor cell proliferation and shaping the tumor microenvironment to facilitate immune evasion.

Colorectal cancer is the third most common cancer and the secod leading cause of cancer death worldwide. The high medical need is indisputable. For those with metastatic disease (around 25% at diagnosis) there is a clear lack of effective treatment options and only approximately 15% of patients survive for five years or longer. Existing immunotherapies are used only in about 5% of these stage IV patients (dMMR/MSI). There are significant efforts to find more effective combination therapies to make immunotherapy, such as pembrolizumab, work in the broader pMMR microsatelite stable colorectal cancer population.
